What Made You Want to Do What You Do?
Nov 20, 2024You do what you do because.......
What's the one "THING" that made you do what you do? There is always one thing that pushes you toward something you do as your job or career. A force that drives you. An internal "feeling" or even a spiritual vibe is why we do what we do.
I have been asking myself this question for a while. My job isn't that sexy; it's not one of those things that most people dream about when they're kids. Most, at age 5-6, wanted to be a Fireman, a Policeman, or something cool. We weren't thinking, "Oh, when I grow up, I want to work at a recording studio as an engineer." I can't wait for those 16-hour days and have no sleep. I'll have no friends because I usually live in a room with nothing but lights and buttons to talk to.
Well, it's not that bad. Being an introvert, I kind of like it now. But when you're 6, you're not thinking these things. At 6 years old, I thought it would be awesome to drive a garbage truck. Or be a shrimp boat captain. (I guess that comes with my location when I was 6.)
But look what happened:
I can define it as one specific moment in my life—one particular instant when I said, "That's it. That's what I want to do."
My friends and I were probably 12 or 13 years old. Lynyrd Skynrd released an album with the song "Free Bird." I mean, really? Need I say more? That 42-minute guitar solo, the lyrics, and the feeling that this song is about me and for me. Everything about that song just "Made sense" to me. I was hooked. I had never heard of or felt anything like it.
I wanted to know how they did that. How did they make that sound happen? How did they make that kind of sound come out of the radio and give me that feeling? I wanted everyone to have "That Feeling."
I knew EXACTLY what I was supposed to do. I knew the exact reason I was put here.
That song was the main reason why I do what I do. Even today, when that song comes on, I have to stop doing what I'm doing and crank it the fuck up. It's a ritual. It's an homage to a force of life. It's hard to explain. But it is my life force.
And I know that each of you has that "ONE THING" that is your Free Bird.
Tell us about it in the comments. I'd love to hear your story.
